{"id":2223,"date":"2024-11-07T01:03:52","date_gmt":"2024-11-06T17:03:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tradenet.hk\/b2b\/275-arrested-in-fraud-cases\/"},"modified":"2024-11-07T01:03:52","modified_gmt":"2024-11-06T17:03:52","slug":"275-arrested-in-fraud-cases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tradenet.hk\/b2b\/275-arrested-in-fraud-cases\/","title":{"rendered":"275 arrested in fraud cases"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.news.gov.hk\/eng\/2024\/11\/20241106\/20241106_175651_342\/images\/20241106190627409.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0A total of 275 people have been arrested so far amid a joint investigation by the Social Welfare Department (SWD) and Police to combat fraud cases involving the Traffic Accident Victims Assistance (TAVA), the SWD announced today.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The SWD\u2019s TAVA Section, while processing applications in March this year, detected suspicious elements in the medical certificates submitted by some applicants.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An investigation revealed that the applicants concerned had not sought any medical treatment from the private medical institutions or clinics which had purportedly issued the relevant certificates.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Suspecting the use of false medical certificates, the SWD immediately contacted Police and referred the cases for the force\u2019s investigation. It also ceased processing the applications in question.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The SWD said it will continue to assist the Police investigation, and will recover all the overpaid assistance payments, which amounted to around $14 million, from the applicants involved.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It emphasised that it is a criminal offence to provide false information to obtain TAVA payments, and that offenders, on conviction, are liable to a maximum of 14 years in imprisonment.
